Malena is a 2000 Italian-French drama film directed by Giuseppe Tornatore, starring Giovanna Mezzogiorno, Jacques Weber and Jean-Philippe Côté. The screenplay by Tornatore focuses on the vast gap between poor rural Italy and the country’s high society during the '20s fascist Benito Mussolini regime. The film won two David di Donatello awards, including one for Best Producer (Domenico Procacci). It was also nominated for an Academy Award for best foreign language film of 2000 year. In 1918, a young aristocratic woman named Malena (Giovanna Mezzogiorno) arrives to Milan from Naples with her younger brother, Alessandro (Jacques Weber), to become a member of the Tribolato family. Malena is at first treated by the family with contempt and scorn because she is female and poor; upon her arrival, she and her brother are housed in a horse stable and fed rats. Eventually, after becoming an eating companion for the family's teenage daughter Isabella (Anette Støve), Malena’s status improves; however that only serves to increase the enmity between her and her father. Malena’s father is vehemently anti-Semitic and tries to prevent his daughter from getting to know the Jews; that opposition only serves to increase Malena’s attraction for her Jewish peers. Malena takes pride in her intelligence. She manages to graduate high school despite the lack of education opportunities offered women of her class. She is repulsed by the drabness of the industrial working class neighborhoods she lives in, which are filled with industrial workers, prostitutes, petty criminals and petty thieves. They are a world that she believes is a terrible place to raise a child, and she runs away. Upon her return, she discovers that her father has sent her brother to live with his grandparents at their estate in the mountains of Tuscany. Malena also discovers Alessandro has been having an affair with Isabella’s grandmother, Elena (Maria Agata Massetti). In revenge, she seduces Alessandro for Isabella’s sake and carries on the affair behind her father's back until Elena discovers them together. Malena flees, but makes plans to travel to Rome and join the Russian Revolution there. Her father is killed by the Fascists, and she returns to Italy. Assimilated into the upper classes by her marriage, she quickly becomes bored with her husband, who is just as unsophisticated as she is. Meanwhile, Malena’s Jewish friend Karoline (Astrid Berges-Frisbey) has become pregnant.
